Dit gegeven is een belangrijke factor bij de keuze voor een safehouse. Volledige onthouding proberen te bewaren na verslaving is pittig vanwege de biologische componenten van chemische afhankelijkheid. Des te langer je bij ons blijft, des te hoger is het succespercentage. Een verblijf van 9–12 maanden blijkt in de meeste gevallen ideaal.
Gezien het feit dat de meeste verslaafden al jaren worstelen met verslaving, is dit logisch. Het is irreëel om te suggereren dat 60 dagen behandeling jaren van verslaving ongedaan zal maken. Tijd heelt pas echt alle wonden.
Zo hebben de hersenen tijd nodig om zich opnieuw te conditioneren, onderliggende emotionele problemen moeten worden aangepakt, psychische aandoeningen zoals bijv. depressies, hallucinaties, psychoses of iets anders, hebben tijd nodig om te stabiliseren.
